How I Work With Untrained Dogs for Photo Sessions

Untrained Dog Photography in Dublin OH

If you’ve been putting off booking a session because your dog won’t sit, stay, or even look at the camera… I’ve got some really great news: They don’t have to!

As someone who’s had dogs my entire life—from overexcited puppies to rescue pups with big feelings—I can tell you firsthand: every dog is photographable. I’ve learned so much over the years just by living with and loving dogs who ya know, didn't follow all the rules. And honestly, those personalities are exactly what makes pet portraits so special.

In my experience, I’ve photographed dogs who were untrained, reactive, shy, curious, wild, wiggly, and everything in between. You don’t need a picture-perfect dog to get beautiful portraits. You just need someone who gets them—and that’s where I come in.

There’s No Such Thing as a “Bad” Dog Here
Every single dog has a personality—and I love them all. Some are go-go-go from the minute they arrive. Others take a little time to warm up. I go into every session with patience, flexibility, and zero expectations. These are reactive dog portraits, untrained dog photo sessions, and everything in between, all approached with care and calm. My job is to meet your pup exactly where they are and let them lead the way.

Movement Is Where the Magic Happens
We’re not standing around waiting for a perfect pose. We let your dog do their thing—sniff, wander, play, wiggle, bark, roll in the grass (it happens!). That’s where their true personality shines. And honestly? That’s what we’re here to capture.

Sessions Are Built With Dogs in Mind
Every single session is tailored to your dog. Whether we need an enclosed park, a quiet trail, or a private location for anxious pups, we make it work. I use long lenses so I can keep a comfy distance, and your dog never has to do anything they don’t want to. Comfort and safety come first—always. That’s the heart of great dog photos and what makes a session truly enjoyable for both of you.

You’ll Be Surprised What We Can Create
So many clients come in saying, “My dog won’t sit still for a second,” and leave with stunning images that completely capture their spirit. These sessions aren’t about control—they’re about connection. The expressions, the little looks, the tail wags… that’s the good stuff. And trust me, I’ve got plenty of tricks up my sleeve to make it all happen. That’s part of the fun of photographing dogs—you never know what magic we’ll get until it’s unfolding in front of us.

Frequently Asked Questions About Sessions With Untrained Dogs

What if my dog won’t listen at all?
That’s totally okay! Most of the dogs I photograph have zero formal training. We work with what they naturally give us—and honestly, those moments usually turn out to be the most special.

What if my dog is reactive or nervous around new people?
Let’s chat first! I’ve worked with plenty of dogs who need extra space or time. We’ll plan a quiet location, adjust the pacing, or even rent a private spot to make sure your pup feels safe and secure. Reactive dog portraits are completely possible with the right setup.

Can you still get good photos if my dog is on a leash?
Absolutely. Almost every dog is on-leash during their session—and I remove the leash in editing. That way, your dog stays safe and you still get those clean, gorgeous shots.

Let Go of the Pressure—Your Dog Is Already Perfect
You don’t need a perfectly trained pup to have gorgeous portraits. You just need someone who sees the beauty in your dog exactly as they are. That’s what I love most about pet photography tips I’ve gathered over the years—real dogs are the best dogs, and real moments are always the most memorable.

If you’ve been waiting until your dog is “better behaved,” don’t. Let’s capture the love, the chaos, the quirkiness—and everything in between. It’s all worth remembering.

Connect with me and let's see how we can work together and get your session scheduled!

I promise, we’ll create something beautiful together—wiggles, zoomies, and all.
